​《经济学人》一句俏皮英语，对比疫情放开前后，如何翻译？

睡前读《经济学人》，偶遇一句俏皮话，谈到疫情放开之后春节票房创新高，分享给各位把玩：

(Box-office revenues were not only better than last year, they were also higher than in the year before covid-19.) China’s population, subject until recently to mass screening, is now massing at the screens. （Feb. 5）

这句英文的俏皮之处在于“mass”与“screen”一词多义。

第一个“mass”是形容词，意思是：

having an effect on or involving a large number of people or forming a large amount （《剑桥词典》）

比如“weapons of mass destruction（大规模杀伤性武器）”。

第一个“screening”是动词“screen”的名词形式，意思是：

To test or examine for the presence of disease or infection （《美国传统词典》）

“mass screening”就是我们曾经非常熟悉的“大规模核酸筛查”。

第二个“mass”是动词，意思是：

to come together in large numbers （同上）

第二个“screen”是名词，意思是“银幕”，常引申为“cinema（电影院）”之意。

这句俏皮话意思不难理解，但把英文的俏皮译出来却不容易。前后两个“mass”词义尚在同一范畴，但前后两个“screen”词义相差甚远，似乎很难求得形神兼备的译法。
