On the other side of English Channel, several towns and cities in France recorded their highest-ever temperatures on Monday. Saint-Brieuc, on the normally temperate coast of Brittany, topped 39.5 C. The western city of Nantes recorded 42 C, beating a decades-old high of 40.3 C set in 1949.

In southwestern France's Gironde region, two large wildfires raging for a week across dry pine forests have forced the evacuation of 32,000 people. The DWD said the extreme heat is centered on the Western states of Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia, especially including low-lying areas on the Rhine and Ruhr rivers. Areas of Germany have also raised forest fire alx levels. In 10 of Germany's 16 states, predominately in the south, west and northeast, the highest of five alx stages has been issued. The Bavarian forestry minister has called on the public to be especially careful when walking through forests, warning that even a single cigarette butt can ignite an inferno.

I truely feel for you as I have endured extreme climatic conditions in Africa, Brazil, China and Mongolia. -40C to +45C. At extreme lows, I felt like crying and at the other end of the scale my, FN - LMG ammo-belt & wrist-watch burnt blisters on my neck & wrist. If left in the sun for just a few minutes, weapons, grenades, ammuntion & vehicle bodies were far too hot to touch. Do whatever it takes to protect your bodies from sun damage and be very aware of dehydration. DO NOT wait until you are thirsty before drinking water. Lots of it.

I feel so alone in this comment section. I live in Reykjavik, Iceland and it is one of few places in the world which is experiencing climate cooling. Summers are getting colder here than they were when I was younger.

About those fires - In Australia, we clocked a grass fire as moving at about 120kmh. Those things are incredibly dangerous, and of course, they can connect with forests and more fuel equally fast. Be extremely careful, and get people out of those areas, because the time frxs for escape are much less than you'd think.

We have 35 degrees in Denmark (Nordic country) this is honestly crazy! So thankful for our rainy weather and cold wind from the sea. But this heat is so brutal... 50 degrees is still mangeable, provided the air is dry. If the air is very wet, even a simple 40 degrees can be lethal, because the body can't evacuate any more heat at all.
