Some countries like Turkey and Portugal consume way more fruit per capita than even China does, and I’m sure that’s also due to cultural reasons.
Taiwan has a very similar culture to (some parts of) China, and it consumes slightly more fruit per capita than China does.
Fruit consumption per capita

I live in Japan and I can assure you that the stereotype is not only true, it is not surprising. Also let''''s just get this out of the way but fish is meat in the broader sense. Let’s specify between red meat and seafood.

Anyway, fruit and red meat in Japan is very expensive for a few reasons. As a foreign exchange student I find it nearly impossible to afford buying these lest I can''''t pay my rent. Aside from oranges, Japanese people do not eat much fruit. Because of the cost.
Lately Japanese people have started to consume more red meat and less fish, so Japanese people not eating as much red meat compared to Chinese people and Americans is not really because of cultural reasons it is because it is too expensive here.

By oranges did you mean mandarin oranges?
Also I thought bananas in Japan are the most affordable kind. Have I been misinformed?
Thank you in advance for your reply.

I would think a much, much larger variety & volume of fruits being endemic to China (due to climate) compared to Korea/Japan would explain this if anything. Besides, high fruit consumption is a staple of many of the very poorest countries in the world, lol

South Korea and Japan are simply unable to grow too much fruit comparing mainland China and Taiwan due to climate and geography. This is a result why the fruit in mainland China and Taiwan are always fresher than Japan/South Korea.

It is probably not in the culture of some countries to eat much fruit and vegetables. You will see that in various food postings in Quora. Fruit posting are sadly lacking. Most vegetable are over cooked and mush.

Russians joke that their only vegetables is Vodka (potatoes) in the winter time.
But there is a lot of truth in it, vegetables and fruits simply don''''t grow that much up north. If you take a look at the geography of these three countries, you will find China has diverse climate while Korea and Japan is mostly up north. I am pretty sure that northern Chinese consume less of those than Southerners, same for Hokkaido vs Okinawa.
Its also a fact that the Chinese don''''t like to eat leftovers past about one day. I''''m not sure, but I imagine it stems from a lack of trust in the safety of eating things later than that.
As China''''s economy has improved and the rising middle class has been able to afford it, they are eating vastly more meat than before and more than the typical Asian family in other countries.

There are two jokes about Korean and Japanese in China.
Do you know what gifts the Koreans will be most gratitude when visiting them? Beef and lamb meat ! They just can not afford much of them or can not gulp meat like we chinese do.
A Japanese celebrity visiting china in summer and when she found a whole watermelon is so cheap in china, she almost wept. The reason is Japanese can not afford a whole watermelon cause it is expensive in Japan.
Although china is not rich in GDP, but the vegetable produces and consume are mostly highest in the world. A average chinese consumes more vegestable than a rich westerner because food tradition and cheap price.

I”m not sure about Japan, but when it comes to South Korea, this question and the answer above seem to be based on inaccurate information. I’ve lived in South Korea for over 50 years and have never seen a Korean eat lamb or any kind of mutton, for that matter. When Koreans eat out, they generally go for beef dishes and have wonderful choices when it comes to seafood. Vegetables and many common fruits are not expensive when you consider the average South Korean’s buying power, and in fact, Korean cuisine is heavily based on vegetables.

Reason why it''''s so expensive is because in Japan. Land is a premium there. You won''''t see a watermelon field because of the price of the land.
