英国《经济学人》2月9日文章评电影《满江红》,副标题围绕电影名中的“red”做文章,短短6个单词概括文章主旨,凝练辛辣。请看:

中英文隐喻表达是本号常常谈论的话题,但常谈常新。“see red”之所以引申为“愤怒”,一种说法认为,“红色”常与“passion”“anger”等激烈情绪相关。人一愤怒,气血上涌,面红耳赤,因此“red-faced”“see red”在英文中常表达“生气”。中英文在这一点上有共通之处(中文说“气得脸红”)。

《经济学人》这透着刁钻的副标题让文刀君想到一句东北话:看个电影还看急眼了。
从写作角度,又不得不佩服编辑“wordplay”的功夫。“silver screen(银幕)”代指“电影”,“silver”也是色彩,与“red”呼应。
进入正文,编辑依然不忘在色彩上再渲染一把。请看正文第一句:
“My hair bristles with anger,” young men cry as they leave their red-cushioned cinema seats. “We will feast on the barbarians’ flesh...we will drink their blood.” They are reciting lines from “Full River Red”, a poem believed to be written by Yue Fei, a 12th-century general of the Song dynasty.
“My hair bristles with anger(怒发冲冠)” 呼应“see red“,从句“as they leave their red-cushioned cinema seats”把影院座椅的颜色描述出来,既是新闻写作中对细节的拿捏,也是围绕“red”继续把功夫做足。
如果把修饰词拿掉,意思虽不变,但对比之下不免显得干瘪无趣:
as they leave their seats
as they leave the cinema
读外媒,单就修辞手法而言,就有无穷乐趣。《经济学人》编辑部从“满江红”想到“see red”,隐喻修辞给标题增色不少。文刀君在旧文中曾谈到,美国作家海明威与菲茨杰拉德年轻时玩“修辞比赛”,以锤炼修辞技巧。大作家尚且如此,我们也不妨多加训练。善读外媒,便是一个法门。
