戏说英文 | 查尔斯国王首次演讲，引《哈姆雷特》名句缅怀女王

上一篇谈到了英美政客用典之“谬”，今天我们再来看两处用典之“妙”。

中国人最擅长用典。用典之妙，恰如欧阳修所言，“含不尽之意见于言外”。（参见旧文）

9月9日，英国查尔斯国王发表首次演讲，悼念母亲。结尾处，查尔斯动情地说：

And to my darling Mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late Papa, I want simply to say this: thank you. Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

最后一句出自莎翁名作《哈姆雷特》，“thee”是古英语“you”，“thy”是古英语“your”。

在悲剧最后一幕，Hamlet 中毒身亡，在好友Horatio 怀中逝去。Horatio悲痛地说：

Now cracks a noble heart. Good night, sweet prince. And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

一颗高贵的心现在碎裂了！晚安，亲爱的王子，愿成群的天使们用歌唱抚慰你安息。（朱生豪/译)

如今，人们常用“May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest”这句名言来表达对逝者的祝福。

今天是中秋佳节，我们既庆贺团圆也缅怀故人。举杯邀明月，不妨默念莎翁名句，愿满天繁星化作成群的天使，抚慰故人安息。

就在前几日，美国总统拜登发表题为“Soul of the Nation”的演讲，也引用莎翁名句。

拜登在演讲中把特朗普及其支持者“MAGA Republicans”（即“make America great again” Republicans）称为极端分子，称他们对美国立国之基构成“威胁”。拜登上台之前声称要当弥合分歧的“unifier”，而如今的煽动性言论进一步加剧了美国两党的对立。共和党群起攻之，骂他：He stole the soul of the nation. 这一骂有点像美国汉学家孔飞力的名作“Soulstealers（《叫魂》）”。

拜登在演讲结尾引莎翁名句，请看：

And if we all do our duty — if we do our duty in 2022 and beyond, then ages still to come will say we — all of us here — we kept the faith. We preserved democracy.

这句古色古香的英文“ages still to come will say ”出自莎翁的十四行诗（第17首）：

The age to come would say 'This poet lies.’

后人会说“诗人撒谎”。

换成今天的大白话就是：the future generations will say。

英美高层写作班子不约而同地引用莎翁名句，可见莎士比亚在英文世界的影响力。“May flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest”比“Rest in peace.”感情更浓烈，“含不尽之意见于言外”。“ages still to come will say” 自然比“the future generations will say”更富文采。这是用典之妙。
