《华尔街日报》24日文章报道在图书馆假装上班的失业人群。

文章导语写得很好，好在言简意赅，好在用词走心了。一句导语道出失业人群的心酸与无奈，奠定文章基调。

Unemployed and afraid to tell their families, many need a place to figure out their futures; for some, it’s the stacks. （Dec. 24, WSJ）

令文刀君驻足停留的是“stacks”一词。“stacks”是“书架”之意，可以代指标题中的“library”。

stacks: The area of a library in which most of the books are shelved. （《美国传统词典》）

以“stacks”代指“library”，是英文中常用的“synecdoche（提喻）”修辞手法：以部分代整体（或者以整体代部分）。我们熟悉的英文俚语“all hands on deck”便运用了提喻修辞（以“hands”代指“sailors”）。

从新闻写作的角度，“stacks”更具象（specific），让读者一下子联想到一排排的书架，“library”则比较笼统（general）。虽然二者词义一样，但“stacks”让整句导语情感更细腻。

上文提到要善用生成式人工智能辅助语言学习，我们不妨把导语中的“stacks”改成“libraries”，让大语言模型品读一下两句话在情感传递上的微妙差异。请看Google Bard的表现：

The use of the word "stacks" to refer to the shelves of books in a library creates a sense of comfort and refuge, as if the books themselves can offer solace to those who are struggling. The second sentence （using “libraries” instead of “stacks”）is more straightforward, but it does not have the same emotional impact as the first. 

对于“不敢告诉家人”的失业者(unemployed and afraid to tell their families)，图书馆成了暂求心灵慰藉的“避难所”，更具象的“stacks”比笼统的“libraries”更能传递“a sense of comfort and refuge”，因而“情感冲击（emotional impact）”比直接用“library”更强。看来，Google Bard是懂英文用词微妙差异（nuances）的。

新闻导语是新闻写作中的重要一环，导语写得好，可以很快“薅住读者的衣领子”。品读外媒，不可无视记者编辑在导语上的思量。

《华尔街日报》这句导语让文刀君想起英国作家毛姆的一句妙喻：

养成读书习惯，等于给自己搭建了一处躲避人生绝大部分苦难的避难所。

To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all the miseries of life. （Books and You）

毛姆幽默地补充道，之所以说“绝大部分苦难”，因为“饥饿之苦”与“单相思之痛”没办法靠读书缓解。

也许，读书可以缓解失业的迷茫。愿失业者在图书馆一排排书架之间，闻着阵阵书香，早日走出迷茫。
