​秦刚以“狂飙”喻中美关系，《金融时报》这样翻译，有劲儿

3月7日，外交部长秦刚就“中国外交政策和对外关系”答记者问。秦部长谈到中美关系时讲了一句隐喻，受到外媒广泛关注：

“如果美方不踩刹车，继续沿着错误道路狂飙下去，再多的护栏也挡不住脱轨翻车，必然陷入冲突对抗。”

“踩刹车”“狂飙”“脱轨翻车”，这一串隐喻表达画面感十足，很有劲儿。

CNN等国内外英文媒体这样翻译：

If the United States does not hit the brakes, but continues to speed down the wrong path, no amount of guardrails can prevent derailing, and there will surely be conflict and confrontation. （CNN, 7/3/2023）

这样翻译没有问题，也较好地还原了原文的隐喻形象。

然而，译无止境。以“speed”这个略显宽泛笼统的动词译“狂飙”二字，似乎欠一点力道，欠一点画面感。换言之，“飙”劲儿不够。

我们不妨微调一下，换一个更为具体的（more specific）动词。

来看英国《金融时报》的处理：

If the US doesn’t hit the brakes and continues to barrel down the wrong track, no amount of guardrails can prevent the carriage from derailing and crashing, and there will surely be conflict and confrontation. （Financial Times, 7/3/2023）

把“speed”替换成“barrel”，画风立时鲜明犀利不少。

“barrel”可以作名词，一个常用意思是“枪杆子”。比如，Political power comes out of the barrel of a gun.（枪杆子里出政权）。

“barrel”作动词在新闻英语里也很常见，常作为“speed”“rush”“run”“dash”等动词的替换语使用。“barrel”之所以比“speed”更有“飙”劲儿，因为这个词比“speed”更具体，除了给人“快”的感觉，还透着一股子鲁莽劲儿（reckless）。

来看英文词典释义：

barrel：to move very fast in a particular direction, especially in a way that you cannot control （Oxford）

《美国传统词典》对“barrel”一词的释义或许说得更清楚些：

（slang）An act or instance of moving rapidly, often recklessly, in a motor vehicle.

“barrel”与“speed”虽然是同义词，但词气上是有细微差别（nuance）的。正是这常常“只可意会却难以言传”的“nuance”，是人工智能尚无法完全取代专业人工翻译的关键所在。

佛家把众生又称之为“有情（sentient beings）”，世间的文字多半也注入了有情众生的心识与情感，因而，有很大一部分的翻译工作是需要“有情”的译者去感知文字的冷暖，感知文字的细微之处。这既是翻译的乐趣，也是翻译熬人心神的地方。
