​美国频繁用“pacing challenge”给中国定性，如何翻译？

2月15日，美国常务副国务卿谢尔曼在布鲁金斯学会“全球中国”（Global China）论坛上发表讲话，再次用“pacing challenge”给中国定性。

We’ve known that the PRC is the pacing geopolitical challenge of our era – one that will test American diplomacy like few issues in recent memory.

我们已经知道，中华人民共和国是我们这个时代的地缘政治步调挑战—— 一个在我们近期记忆中罕见的考验美国外交的挑战。（2.17 “美国驻华大使馆”公众号）

早在2021年初，美国国防部长奥斯汀首次公开使用“pacing challenge”来描述中国。自去年以来，这一提法频繁被美国高级官员使用，热度逐渐上升。

英国《卫报》2月15日文章详细分析了西方国家给中国定性时的措辞，并对美国官方提出的“pacing challenge”做了解释。

In recent weeks, the official catchphrase for Beijing has been the slightly nebulous “pacing challenge”, suggesting the US is the world’s constant frontrunner with China ever closer to its shoulder.

美国福克斯新闻网（FOX News）曾这样解释：... which refers to a competitor making significant progress toward challenging US defense strategy.

正如《卫报》所言，“pacing challenge”有些“模糊（nebulous）”，因此外媒报道时不得不解释一句，否则一般英文读者真不容易看懂。

综合《卫报》与FOX的解释，我们回头看“美国驻华大使馆”公众号给出的官方译法：步调挑战。

显然，“步调挑战”是按英文字面直译，正如美国读者对“pacing challenge”感到陌生，中文读者见到“步调挑战”这四个字估计也是一脸问号。原文模糊，官方译者似乎也不敢迈开步子，恐落人口实。这情有可原。

如果让中文读者读懂“pacing challenge”这一重要提法，我们不妨结合外媒的解释，把这个词说得明白些。

从全球中文媒体的报道来看，文刀君见到更接近“pacing challenge”内涵的几种译法：

步步紧逼的挑战

进展最快的挑战

在奥斯汀看来，中俄都对美国构成威胁/挑战，但发展势头正好相反。奥斯汀原话是：Russia is also a threat, but it is in decline.

对比来看，“a pacing challenge”其实就是“a formidable and ever-growing challenge（挑战既不容小觑又与日俱增）”。

美国官方也许还会延续“步调挑战”这一模糊译法，但我们要尽量搞清楚这一重要提法的内涵。
